Bay Area beat constructor King Most put a up-rockish spin on D'Angelo's hazy classic "Brown Sugar." The famously mellow anthem of slow-burning gets a little kick in its BPM, injected with big, shuffling drums and whirling clavs, the result of which is an instantly more severe, more biting arrangement, departing from the perfected cool of D's debut without losing the addictive groove that drove it. It's the latest rhythmic redirection in a brilliant campaign that's seen Most flip the likes of Nina Simone, Anita Baker, Teena Marie, Charlie Wilson and so many more legends of funk, jazz and soul.
