Mixtape Monday: DJ Premier, DJ Manipulator x Louie Gonz, D.R.U.G.S. Beats + More

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Just days removed from Global Hip-Hop Day, this week's episode of Mixtape Monday is a nod to the culture with archival sets, instrumental projects, tribute mixes, gritty underground tapes and more from a handful of selectors and producers.

Classic radio sets from DJ Eclipse and DJ Premier circa Stretch and Bob's Boogie & The Barber get cozy with a Kanye West 40th birthday tribute from DJ Stylus. DJ Manipulator and Louie Gonz give us The Loops, while Jett I Mastyr takes the true heads to church with Early Service.

UK outfit The Good Vibe, Warsaw’s Digital Meditation and Grand Groove Radio counter the boom bap with soulful sets to close things out.

DJ Eclipse - The Halftime Show on 89.1 WNYU 01.23.13 (1980-1984 Joints)

DJ Eclipse takes it back to the genesis of hip-hop culture with a mix full of foundational rap jams from the 80s. Arriving just in time to commemorate the unveiling of New York City's "Hip-Hop Boulevard" fka Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, the mix features a number of classic cuts and rap legends.

Been meaning to post this one for a minute now. With Thursday's "Global Hip Hop Day" kick off ceremony renaming Sedgwick Ave to Hip Hop Blvd I figured I'd post this today. An all vinyl set from a few years ago on Halftime playing records from 1980-1984. Also had great conversations with Grandmaster Caz (Cold Crush Brothers) (16:14), Sal Abbatiello (Disco Fever) (36:43) (52:20) (both breaks also with Caz) and Silver Fox (Fantasy Three) (74:39) (108:36). AND we had Kool G Rap call in (82:15) to speak on Silver Fox who was a big influence on G. Last mic break at 149:47. All this plus DJ JS-1 who helped out by rocking instrumentals during all the mic breaks.

DJ Premier - Boogie & The Barber on WQHT (May 18, 1997)

In the Spring of 1997 DJ Premier dropped a fire mix set live in session with Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia for their post-KCR Boogie & The Barber show on NYC's Hot 97. DJ Eclipse was gracious enough to edit the original broadcast for optimal listening.

DJ Premier on the wheels all night although both Stretch & Bob were there. For those that remember this was when Stretch's car was stolen with some crates of his records in the back so he had nothing to play for a minute. The days pre-serato were real. I had edited out all the commercials so this is a full show even though it looks like it clocks in a little less. No guests. One mic break at 24:22 and another at 99:02. They also shout out Raida who's birthday party at Club Vinyl was the day before.

Jett I Mastyr - Early Service

H-Town representative Jett I. Masstyr digs the gospel of his youth with the arrival of Early Service -- an instrumental project that samples the soul-stirring, inspirational tunes of the church. Chopping and flipping some of his favorites, Jett I. Masstyr delivers a moving collection of beats. If you dug Kanye’s “Jesus Walks” or Sango & Xavier Omar’s “JMK,” you should absolutely love this.

Jett I Masstyr's latest project, 'Early Service' is an instrumental EP crafted from soulful gospel selections. Jett I. has always enjoyed gospel music going back to his younger days attending the church his Grandmother played piano/organ for, or attending Brentwood Baptist Male chorus rehearsal with his Father who sang bass. 'Early Service' captures the genuine soul and puts it on display in rap instrumental form.
