This is a bit of a special Mixtape Mondays in that it just might be the first time we've only featured one DJ. It also might be the first time that we've given you over 9 hours of music in one post. Who's the lucky DJ? Over the last few years, New York's DJ Chief One (who Lessonheads might know as My_SP1200_Is_Broken.) has begun tackling 1990s (mostly) east-coast hip-hop year by year with the appropriately titled mixes 1991, 1992, and 1993. Unfortunately the rest of the decade hasn't been appropriately broken down and mixed back together yet, but we can't wait to hear the rest of the decade through DJ Chief One's ears.

DJ Chief One - 1991 :
The best thing about DJ Chief One's '90s mixes is that the song selection isn't obvious. It's almost like finding an old 120 minute mixtape you made back in 1991 to listen to on the school bus, and not an attempt to "define" the year. DJ Chief One includes some of the must-haves hits of the year ("Steady Mobbin," "The Choice Is Yours," "Check The Rhime,") but also goes for album tracks and remixes that will make those of us old enough to remember these songs when they were new a bit misty eyed.
And besides, when's the last time you heard a mixtape that had a Justin Warfield song on it?

Of the three '90s mixes Chief One has done so far, this one might be my favorite. I wanted to start running around a sewer like I was in a Das EFX video from the minute I hit play, so I wasn't surprised when "They Want EFX" popped up about halfway into DJ Chief One's 3-hour tribute to 1992.

1993 must have been a great year for DJ Chief One as his 1993 mix cracks the four hour mark. But nowhere in these 251 minutes do things get boring. 1993 was the year we met Biggie. Original Flavor reintroduced us to Jay-Z. Snoop & Dre were just getting started. Wu-Tang Clan? Yeah, that was 1993 too.
