OKP Premiere: K-OS Shares The Postive Anthem "Spaceship" Ahead Of New LP
The return of K-OS grows ever nearer. The Canadian songwriter-MC will release his new LP, Can't Fly Without Gravity on August 28th via Dine Alone Records, and now, just four weeks from the drop date, we've been gifted with a brand new single from the record. Okayplayer is proud to premiere "Spaceship," an uplifting, self-affirming track that has K-OS recalling a great many of the reasons that lead him to hip-hop in the first place.
With tales of writing at a young age, rapping streetside before school started and already making a strong commitment to the truth, the K-OS we hear on "Spaceship" is firm but non-aggressive; the MC makes it clear that ideals are what matters most. They may lead to strange glances and even isolation (thus, K-OS's own personal "Spaceship"), but they also open up a whole new universe to explore. With upbeat choruses and clear, confessional verses, the cut culminates in a drum and bass break, offering listeners their own time to ponder and parse things out, just before it all sweeps back around.
"I was initially scared to release this song - it was supposed to be on my last record Black On Blonde, but I was too shook to release it," K-OS told Okayplayer He went on to explain:
“It's a vulnerable tune. Sometimes in rap you always wanna present the hardest most secure side of yourself. So when you create a track that embodies a child like essence it's confusing simply because you're not a child anymore. At the end of it all 'Spaceship' takes me back to the record JoyfuL RebelLion - before I was known and before I had an image to protect. It’s like a short biography of my rap life. And even though it's not the hardest or darkest track in the world, fact is human beings aren't always hard and dark. How would you know what was dark If you didn't experience the light? A knife can't cut itself.”
Earlier this month K-OS shared "Crucify," an Ella Fitzgerald-sampling track with a decidedly darker tone, but on "Spaceship," it's all a matter of certainty and light. You can pre-order Can't Fly Without Gravity on iTunes now, and listen to "Spaceship" below. Find the full tracklisting to K-OS's new LP after the jump.
