Prince Holds More Than Half of Spotify's "US Viral 50" Chart Positions
Prince, a vocal critic of the internet in his mortal phase, returned to non-TIDAL streaming platforms last weekend ahead of The Grammys, where Bruno Mars and Morris Day & The Time paid tribute to the late icon. And though he was reluctant to go all-in with streaming before his tragic passing, a series of deals with Universal Music Group, brought the dearly beloved catalog back to the world, igniting a purple party in the cloud.
How ferocious is this housequake, you ask? At the moment, Prince holds 29 of Spotify's "US Viral 50" chart positions and 21 of those positions on the streaming platforms "Global Viral 50" chart. And it's not that we're necessarily surprised about the very predictable 6,000%+ uptick in The Kid's cloud-play, but if the estate was harboring any residual insecurities over the resurgent move, we hope they're walking into this week with renewed confidence.
And while we can all finally celebrate The Purple One with proper rotations, an official celebration of music's original five-foot assassin will be held at Paisley Park the weekend of April 20th, commemorating the one year anniversary of his death. The weekend will host performances from The Revolution, Morris Day & The Time, members of 3rdEyeGirl and many more.
