Roxane Gay + Yona Harvey To Write New ‘Black Panther’ Comics 'World of Wakanda'

Run The Jewels Scores, Ta-Nehisi Coates Narrates A Black Panther Companion Piece

The Black Panther universe is getting bigger. There is of course the obvious reboot of the comics with Ta-Nehisi Coates, a national correspondent at The Atlantic, and author of Between the World and Me, a National Book Award winner, writing the series. Then there's Run The Jewels being involved. And to top it off Black Panther is getting the big screen treatment with a film directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) and cast members Lupita Nyong’o and frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan. It's coming out sometime in 2018. And now Coates has recruited writer Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, and poet Yona Harvey to write a brand new series entitled World of Wakanda. Coates cited that he felt it important to have women write women's voices. The Marvel comic will follow the story of lovers Ayo and Aneka, two former members of the Dora Milaje, the Black Panther's all female security force. The first issue will have a supplemental story written by Harvey about the character Zenzi, a revolutionary who starts a riot in the first issue of Black Panther. The Black Panther comics have been doing well with Ta-Nehisi Coates writing. The first issue of Black Panther has sold around 300,000 copies. Marvel is undoubtedly looking to expand upon that success. Coates will also co-write for the new World of Wakanda. All in all, the addition of Gay and Harvey, two fantastic writers, is welcome news in an industry predominately dominated by white men.

Black Panther: World of Wakanda will premiere in November.
