Okayafrica Audio: Hear Sinkane's Sensual New Song "Hold Tight" + New LP 'Mean Love'
Sinkane AKA Ahmed Gallab has been on the come down from Mars his 2012 LP that brought us new wave dance pop via DFA Records. Though the singles “Jeeper Creeper,” “Runnin,” & “Warm Spell” stay in heavy rotation we can't help but anticipate the singer's new full length LP Mean Love. Since making his solo debut, the Sudanese-born Brooklyn based instrumentalist has proved to be a key creative force - serving as the the inaugural music director/bandleader of The Atomic Bomb! Band's live tribute to William Onyeabor alongside David Byrne, Damon Albarn, the Lijadu Sisters, Dev Hynes, Money Mark, and his own bandmates Jaytram, Ish Montgomery, and Jonny Lam. Mean Love features the work of co-producer and friend of Gallab Greg Lofaro. The synergy is clear in the lead single "Hold Tight" which has whirled it's way into our personal air waves.
"Hold Tight" is sensual track with a deep groove that exists in a silky smooth retro ballad. The song is definitely a slow burner with strong drums and swells of elevation giving it a Sade-esque feel. The song is like literature that has broken through the bounds of a book, glistening through the sonic space. With a thumping bass and distant organs the spacey track becomes a modern take on soul - not to mention Gallab's androgynous vocalizations. Sinkane hits the sweet spot between driving synth-pop and bedroom R&B wrapped together by the familiar sounds of 80s/early 90s mood music. Because he seeks to create truly universal music, Sinkane's latest body of work is sure to reflect a head space that everyone can function in. From working with under recognized international musicians to successful hit-makers, the multidimensional musician is set to deliver a distinctive work of art to match his always authentic style.
