The chance to meet Stevie Wonder would be enough to make anyone on Earth a little nervous, but for Stones Throw label head and fervent record fiend Peanut Butter Wolf, the moment was especially...awkward. In the latest installment of Opiyo Okeyo's Legends+Pioneers video series, the wolf reminisces on the time he got to meet his hero Stevie Wonder under--under less than ideal circumstances.
Their run-in took place in a restaurant bathroom, after Peanut Butter Wolf spotted the living legend on his way to the restroom. Following in funky hot pursuit, Wolf was initially shot down by Mr. Wonder's bodyguard, being (rightly) told "This isn't the right time or place." But Stevie, bless his heart, called his nervous fan over and was all too happy to talk shop for a bit, and Wolf took advantage. "I asked him, 'Have you ever heard of Madlib?'" Wolf remembers, a name which Stevie admitted was a bit too obscure for him. The label head and record collector explained that Madlib had recently produced an album using only Wonder's music, and--as lucky may have it--the record was right there in his bag. Wolf handed it to Stevie, only to admit "I got a little offended that he didn't look at the CD cover, and then I forgot that he was blind." C'mon now, Wolf.
As the clip rolls on, PBW recalls playing Prince records in the presence of the Purple One himself and reminds us that, in the end, it's all about the kids. Watch the full Legends+Pioneers segment below.
