Walkingshoe & yU Gently Drift On The Soothing New Single "Nora"
Chicago beatmaker and multi-instrumentalist Walkingshoe has a message: The Future Will Kill You. Dark as that message may be, he's not wrong--eventually time erases everything, and at some point in the years ahead we will all pass away. But if death is guaranteed, why be down about it? It'd be a waste not to relish in the joys, big and small, that life can offer. That seems to be the real outlook that Walkingshoe is offering with The Future Will Kill You, his brand new LP Cosmonostro-released LP that sees the producer turning out track after track of deeply soulful hip-hop.
A deft guitarist who writes folk music in his off-hours, Walkingshoe made TFWKY to be a sonic journey into a kind of comforting unknown. Sunburnt synthesizer notes arc above his rattling beats, at times recalling the works of Flying Lotus and post-rock outfit Tycho. Guitars are abundant, but this isn't a "live hip-hop" jam session--Walkingshoe's beats are the obvious product of hours spent with electronics. On new single "Nora," which features the talents of Diamond District MC yU, a Brazilian wind wafts back and forth over a steady beat, nylon guitar and metallic hums dopplering over each other. "Nora" is a push forward out of simple Bossa Nova sampling and into a new surroundings entirely, one where digital clicks and ray gun zings travel mix with age-old ocean water. This is the sound of floating on your back, watching space stations drift high over the Pacific.
