Yasiin Bey Transforms Electric Wire Hustle's "Chaser" Into Mounds Of Musical "Marigolds"
Yasiin Bey (the artist formerly known as Mos Def) has been popping up on a number tracks over the past month, dropping gems over cooled-out, throwback-ish productions from Golden Rules on "Never Die" and weeks before that A$AP Rocky's closing ALLA cut "Back Home." Today he's resurfaced on a very special one-off, transforming Kiwi r&b renegades Electric Wire Hustle's "Chaser" (a standout from their 2009 self-titled debut) into something new and beautiful and full of atmospheric goodness. Bey rides the low-end with ease, dousing the track in fluttery whistles and bird calls before unleashing some cool, cold verbal. The result is something he likes to call "Marigolds" and something we like to call "dope." According to A Country Called Earth, the track was cut in one take, no filler, but all chaser, at Kenny Allen Studios in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, making this a true-blue intercontinental funk connection from some of OKP's favorites in the game.
