Okayafrica Video: Yasiin Gives Esquire A Bey's-Eye View Of Morocco On 'The Getaway'
Can there be any surer sign that Okayplayer culture is trending worldwide than clicking on the latest webisode in Esquire Magazine's The Getaway series of travel video guides...and seeing Yasiin Bey and Ferrari Sheppard posted up in Marrakech's famous Jemaa el Fna night market, sipping on some mint tea and bopping heads in time to some Gnawa jams? That was a rhetorical Q:, of course but just for clarity's sake, A: there can not. We outchea, indeed.
Not that there's any better place for Yasiin (or Esquire, for that matter) to be. They're just doing what they supposed to, and so is Okayafrica, who spotted this story yesterday. As the video hints, Gnawa is a trance-inducing form of spiritual music directly related to the traditional desert blues of Mali, and originally introduced to Morocco by Sub-saharan slaves transported North across the Sahel Zone. If you take away nothing from this video than an inkling to learn more about Gnawa music, you still won today. Speaking for myself Night Spirit Masters is already on my all-time most-played list, so I'm taking closer notes on how to get to Jemaa el Fna from here. Beats living with all this bullshit.
