'Abbott Elementary' Will Return With 22 Episodes
Abbott Elementary has scored a 22-episode second season, which show creator and star Quinta Brunson confirmed on Thursday at Comic-Con.
Abbott Elementary fans are in for a plentiful second season. After the ABC hit series scored multiple Emmy nominations last week, Deadline has reported that the show will have a 22-episode season two renewal. According to broadcast business rules, midseason entries receive a 13-episode season two order, but if their return has a strong showing, shows can be granted a maximum of 22 episodes.
The show was renewed back in March, and the decision to give Abbott 22 episodes came in June, ahead of their seven Emmy nominations, including the categories of Outstanding Comedy Series; Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Writing for a Comedy Series for series creator Quinta Brunson; and Supporting Actress/Actor in a Comedy Series for Tyler James Williams, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
On Thursday (July 22) at a Comic-Con panel for Abbott in San Diego, where cast and crew participated remotely, Brunson hinted towards the 22-episode second season.
“We spent a lot of the first season showing what this show is capable of. … Now we get to have some fun,” she said. “We’ve done all the building, and now we get to have some of these fun bottle episodes.”
Fellow executive producer Patrick Schumacker added, “and more episodes.”
“Can we say that?” Brunson asked.
Schumacker shrugged, to which Brunson confirmed a full second season, “OK, there you go. We have more episodes this season than in the first.”
Season two of Abbott Elementary returns on September 21.
