REVIVE Interview: Adrian Younge Speaks On ‘There Is Only Now’
Adrian Younge is a producer and a multi-instrumentalist with industry experience remarkable for even a seasoned veteran. Adrian produces and engineers with only the antiques of the recording process — a full analog studio, a vintage mic locker — but that doesn't stop him from creating with modern musical masterminds. Adrian has a record out with Ghostface Killahand he recently composed for the film Black Dynamite; but more recently, Adrian linked with Oakland’s legendary Souls of Mischief to produce their sixth album, There Is Only Now, set to be released on Younge’s Linear Labs imprint on August 26th (word is, he's been in the lab with Bilal and Kendrick Lamar, too! Stay tuned.) There Is Only Now showcases a collection of features from some of hip-hop's finest, including Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Living Legends’ Scarub, and William Hart of the legendary Delfonics. Both Souls of Mischief and Adrian Younge will be here in New York next week to celebrate the release of their album at Le Poisson Rouge on August 28th. In anticipation for the release, Revive sat down with Adrian to really learn about the creation of this masterpiece.
This is being released on my label, Linear Labs. It’s a label that I created where I want to purvey to the masses what I deem as being handmade and handcrafted music. It’s something where I have the artist come into the booth and we’re recording on two-inch tape and we’re using all the old methods. It’s kind of like a tailor; it’s ornate. I want everybody to know with my label that this will be the kind of stuff that you can expect. If people like There Is Only Now, then whenever they find my logo for Linear Labs then they can expect to find that kind of exemplary musicianship.
