Anderson .Paak Earns His First Top 10 Album With 'Ventura'
Last year's Oxnard came close, peaking at No. 11.
Anderson .Paak's latest album Venturahas earned him his first top 10.
The drummer and singer hit the No. 4 spot with "55,000 equivalent units, of which 39,000 were actual sales," according to Forbes. The report goes on to note that Ventura is .Paak's fourth charting album on the Billboard 200, but none of the albums before that had made it into the top 10. Last year's Oxnard almost did however, peaking at No. 11.
.Paak recently performed at this year's Coachella, providing sets for both weekends of the festival. For his last Coachella set, the artist brought out Brandy to perform "Jet Black," a song she's featured on from Ventura, as well as Jay Rock, who performed “King’s Dead,” the Black Panther track that also includes Kendrick Lamar, Future, James Blake, and Mike Will Made-It, and his Redemption track “Win.”
Ventura is the follow-up to .Paak’s 2018 release Oxnard. Speaking to Okayplayer, .Paak discussed the differences between the two albums.
“There is a lot more soul,” the artist said of Ventura. “A lot of beauty…a lot of funky cool shit, man. [Dr.] Dre has a lot of trust in me. And allows me leeway with the writing and the production…I went through the boot camp — which I felt like Oxnard and Compton were like my boot camp.”
He also discussed how Ventura and Oxnard were finished at the same time but they couldn’t be released at the same time.
“…there was just timing issues. So I was like ‘cool, let’s get Oxnard out and then we’ll get Venturaout shortly after,'” .Paak said. “I liked that people were surprised. The timing was good, too, because I just got the Grammy and we solidified the tour. So I felt that there was no better timing to give them the other half of the story.”
