Come Out & Stand w/ Baltimore At The #BMOREYOUTHRISE Rally This Sat. May 9th
In so many ways, despite the mainstream media's total misrepresentation of the protests responding to Freddie Gray's murder, Baltimore has risen. Rival gangs have united, communities have converged and it's all making for a revolutionary moment in a Mid-Atlantic oasis that's been decimated by decades of economic and racial segregation. But the fight for our nation's youth is far from over. A sprawling list of artists, community activists, youth groups and educational institutions in Baltimore have partnered with The New York Justice League to commence the healing of a community that has lost so many over the years. #BMOREYOUTHRISE will bring together all of those ends and provide an agenda for systemic change this Saturday, May 9th, enlisting in the city's youth to erect a mural in honor of Gray in his West Baltimore neighborhood, followed by a Youth Town Hall meeting, a march for peace through Gray's neighborhood and capping the day off with a youth rally, featuring performances from Freeway, Skyzoo, Gods'illa and Jasiri X. Come out for a day of love, support and peaceful protest in solidarity with a community still reeling from loss. Check out the full list of action items and the itinerary for the day down below.
#1 To convene a diverse group of local, community-based organizations to promote existing programs and form a newly established partnership, i.e. a unified program leave-behind for the youth.#2 To convene a one-day gathering of prominent national organizations, celebrities, and media partners who will help to cast a wide net of support for Baltimore youth and those like them across the U.S., i.e. create a possible, national model for civic engagement.
#3 To educate and distribute information to youth on safely and respectfully interacting with the police, i.e. establishing clear guidelines on their rights as a citizen, in addition to guidance on what positive civil disobedience looks like.
#4 To educate young people on how to get involved in the legal system, play a more significant role in political justice, and exercise their right to vote.
#5 To gather widespread support for the following three, national legislative priorities as identified by the Justice League's #March2Justice leadership:
JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ACT (JJDPA): (Protecting Children and Providing for Our Communities.) The JJDPA creates a federal-state partnership for the administration of juvenile justice and delinquency prevention by providing: a juvenile justice planning and advisory system, and a federal funding plan for delinquency prevention and improvements in state and local juvenile justice programs. The JJDPA also sets forth federal standards to ensure a minimum level of safety and equitable treatment for youth who come into contact with the juvenile justice system.
END RACIAL PROFILING ACT: (The End Racial Profiling Act (ERPA)) (H.R. 2851), would prohibit the use of profiling on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin or religion by law enforcement agencies.
MILITARIZATION BILL: (Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act) (H.R. 5478) - Amends the program under which the Secretary of Defense is authorized to transfer excess personal property of the Department of Defense (DOD) to federal and state agencies for law enforcement activities. Excludes counter-drug activities from the categories of law enforcement activities for which DOD property may be transferred under such program. The legislation lays out a number of changes to current law.
