Can You Spot the Autographed New Power Generation Drumhead in Bernie Sanders' Office?
In 2019, the band performed at a Bernie rally Minnesota.
On Tuesday, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders appeared on CNN with Dr. Anthony Fauci. The two discussed the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the country.
During the conversation, an item in Sanders' home office caught the eyes of music lovers. A New Power Generation drumhead can be seen hanging over the senator's shoulder. The band served as Prince's backing band from 1990 to 2013, contributing to twelve of his albums and recording three of their own.
The band recorded its most notable work in the early 1990s. The albums Diamonds and Pearls and Love Symbol Album are officially credited to Prince and the New Power Generation. Diamonds and Pearls hit the number three spot on the US Billboard 200 and sold 7 million copies. Love Symbol Album peaked at number five in the US, while topping the United Kingdom's charts. The album sold 3.5 million copies.
In 2019, the band performed at a Sanders rally alongside Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar. The City Pages speculates that would be the source of the drumhead.
During his two campaigns, Sanders assembled an admirable group of musical endorsements. Run the Jewels, Public Enemy Radio, Vampire Weekend, The Strokes, and Bon Iver all appeared at Sanders rallies at one point or another.
