"I wanted to do something where Bernie could hear people sing his praises while he's here." - Nona Hendryx
We here at OKP HQ were crushed when keyboardist and P-Funk royalty, Bernie Worrell, had revealed a Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis at top of the year. And while it's criminally easy to jump to the worst case, a group of musicians, young and old, have joined together to sing, play and honor the best case. On Monday, April 4th, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, Questlove, Nona Hendryx, Maceo Parker, Living Colour, Paul Schaefer and a literal ton of others will cross all of the streams at NYC's Webster Hall in paying tribute to Worrell and raising money to cover medical and housing costs. Those familiar with the P-Funk legacy know that the crew and its many moving parts have been attempting to claim royalties on samples following decades of being shafted by shady recording industry folk. So yes, this is a necessary and proper effort to insure that Worrell lives out his days in comfort and funk.
