DJ Rahdu - Some Jazz 23: Herbie Hancock Remakes & Covers
DJ Rahdu drops a rack of Herbie Hancock jams with the arrival of Some Jazz 23 for Bamalovesoul.
Miles gets a lot of credit for electrifying Jazz but Herbie did a lot as well, embracing and even seeking out technology and incorporating it into his performances and recordings. I recently read Herbie is working on an album which will feature Kendrick Lamar, Thundercat, Snoop and Flying Lotus who has already received a Hancock composition, Tesla. Herbie Hancock's ability to thrive in an often uncompromising music genre, and enhance its sound by continuing to look forward without restraint has influenced many musicians. I've included many here, but there are so many others. I'm loving the new Jazz scene right now. Enjoy Some Jazz 23 and seek the new blood...
DJ Filthy Rich - Hard To Earn 25th Anniversary Tribute
DJ Filthy Rich follows gigantic tributes to A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, and Black Moon with a nod to Gang Starr’s 1994 album Hard To Earn.
DJ Premier & Guru (R.I.P.), the duo more popularly known as Gang Starr, released their 4th album 'Hard To Earn' on March 8, 1994. Tired of being labeled as 'jazz-rap', Preemo decided to move away from sampling jazz records, and instead opted for a stripped down style of production. The result was a raw, harder hitting sound, and arguably their best album ever. 'Hard To Earn' is near & dear to me, so I had to get back in the lab and record this 25-year tribute to this legendary album. I've gathered their hits, album cuts & b-sides, and combined them with some original samples, interview soundbites, and my own custom blends.
j.Digs x Gervy Sotana - Up. Radio Show #05
Vancouver’s own j.Digs is back with Episode 5 of the Up. Radio Show featuring guest selector Gervy Sotana.
My guest this week is Gervy Sotana from The Bounce crew. I kick things off with a 20 min set of Future Beats vibes, with tracks from Geotheory, Thrice Groove, sans, Jay Prince, and more. Then he gets into a smooth set of house and funk vibes.
Honey Oat - Honey Oat
Experimental duo Honey Oat drop their self-titled, twelve-track debut packed with plenty of future sounds and soul.
Admiring traditions of jazz, funk, and Shona music while pulsing with post-genre nuance, the duo of old friends known as Honey Oat is drawing silk diagrams of oblique time through sound. Honey Oat’s tiered walls of vocal layerings and blissful Wurlitzer glissandi condense into clouds of complex melodic residue. Gabe Stout’s evocative jazz drumming clusters together beats of improbability and wonder, a bedrock for his own tenderly leaping falsettos. In tandem, Janak JP paints timescapes with an electric piano, coursing through progressive jazz and keys-forward pop features with fluidity. In intimate cross-chatter, Honey Oat activates intensities ranging from knuckles-on-the-keys vamps (‘Wonder In Sights’) to delicate, youthful lullabies (‘Wallpaint’) and levels in between.
Clark & The Community - Garden Snake (Instrumentals)
Fresh off the War Monkey Instrumentals, Clark & The Community tease the forthcoming Garden Snake album with the Garden Snake (Instrumentals).
92 Colby - THREAT
Left coast producer 92 Colby follows the laidback boogie funk opus Wes Wes with the sixteen-track THREAT tape.
Gangster Doodles - Gangster Music Vol. 1
