Big L Will Be Getting a Street Named After Him in Harlem

Over the weekend, it was revealed that Big L will be honored with a street on 140th and Lenox Avenue, named “Lamont ‘Big L’ Coleman Way.”

The legacy of Big L continues. On Instagram over the weekend, it was announced that during a renaming ceremony this month, the late rapper will be honored with a street in Harlem named after him. 140th Street and Lenox Avenue will be named “Lamont ‘Big L’ Coleman Way,” the ceremony being held on May 28th. The Instagram page for the late-rapper's documentary Street Struck announced the news.

“It took a whole lot of effort and Support to get to this great point but as an collective we made it happen, The Biggest Thank you’s [sic] go out to the Dope 500 plus people who signed and passed the petition around so we could get this street renamed,” the Instagram caption read. “There are entirely tooo [sic] many good people that gave this their Support, so with all my Heart I personally want to say THANK YOU!!!!”

In February 1999, Coleman was shot and killed in Harlem on 139th Street, close to the street renaming. During his life, Coleman released one studio album, Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous in 1995. Per The Art of Dialogue, prior to Coleman's untimely death, he wanted to collaborate with three rap veterans in the 90's.

“His dream was he wanted to do a song with Biggie and 2Pac, and he was lyrically nice," DJ Ron G shared. “So before he got killed, we were sitting in my studio smoking and he’s like, ‘Yo, I just want to do a song with JAY-Z, Biggie and 2Pac.’ I was like, ‘Word.'”

The “Lamont ‘Big L’ Coleman Way" street renaming ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 28th from 12 PM ET to 3 PM ET.
