Bronx Community Members are Pushing to Rename a Street After Big Pun
In 2014, an unofficial Big Pun sign was placed on E. 163rd St. and Rogers Place to honor the 14th anniversary of the rapper's death.
The sign was soon quickly taken down by the city. Now, local members of that neighborhood are trying to make it so there is a sign that stays up forever. The Bronx 12 is reporting that community members are trying to officially rename that corner after Big Pun. On that corner already stands a mural of the legendary Bronx MC.
The news outlet reached out to City Councilman Rafael Salamanca, and he said that if enough people support the name change he'll bring something "official"before the city council.
Pun's family is making the push to get this done. Chris Rivers, Big Pun's son, who is also a rapper, was interviewed by Bronx 12 to talk about the name change, saying:
I think it would be amazing to see something more concrete. I think for one of their favorite artists or just for someone who held down the Bronx. I think it would be an amazing thing for us and for his fans."
Nicole Rodriguez, Big Pun's sister, started a petition that has so far gotten close to 4,000 signatures.
Renaming signs after hip-hop legends is not unprecedented. Last year, a street in Queens was renamedafter Phife Dawg, the latelegendaryA Tribe Called Quest member.
