Dungeon Family Legend Big Rube Wrote Morgan Freeman's 'Savage Mode 2' Script
Big Rube is known for his spoken word interludes on OutKast albums.
21 Savage and Metro Boomin went all out for the release of their latest project, Savage Mode 2. The album's drawn headlines for its rollout, with a horror movie-inspired trailer, Pen and Pixel cover, and narration from Morgan Freeman. On Tuesday, Metro revealed that the script was written by an even more iconic Atlanta musical figure--poet Big Rube of the Dungeon Family.
“I read the copy and was like wow, there’s some wisdom in here,” Freeman said. “I think this is the way I think. It’s basically saying don’t suffer fools and when you want something go for that. If [Savage’s music] is a young people thing, then this is stuff they need to be aware of. So it’s a good thing to do.”
Rube is known for his contributions to nearly every OutKast release back in the 1990s. More recently, he performed interludes for Future's Honest and Pluto albums, Spillage Village's Spilligion, and Offset's Father of 4.
Freeman says he took the Savage Mode 2 offer because of how different the role would be compared to his usual projects.
"What happens is you sort of get locked into a position," he explained. "You really don't want to be cast into a mold, but after a few years, it's bound to happen. Every [offer] that's outside of what you consider [your] mold is fun to do. I got to jump at it."
