Biz Markie Reportedly Suffered A Stroke While Recovering From Diabetic Coma
According to a source, Biz Markie is "not doing great" but he is conscious and has been able to communicate with his family via FaceTime.
Several months ago it was reported that Biz Markie had been hospitalized for weeks suffering from undisclosed complications with Type II Diabetes. Now, an update on the rapper's has been shared.
In a report from HipHopDX, Biz is still recovering from a diabetic coma in a rehab facility in the DMV area — where he has been for months — and unfortunately suffered a stroke while recovering, too.
"He’s not doing great, but it’s not as scandalous as it felt in the beginning," a source close to Biz told DX. "Short story is Biz is diabetic, he had slipped into a diabetic coma, but that has happened to him in the past and it would only last a little while. He would go to the hospital, get discharged and get his meds under control. This particular time, he had a stroke while he was in the middle of the coma."
The report goes on to note that although Biz is conscious and has been able to communicate with his family via FaceTime, the stroke affected his brain and it’s difficult for him to communicate.
Biz has been battling Diabetes for the better part of the last decade. In 2014, he was named the spokesperson for Zevia’s sugar-free soda line after losing more than 140 pounds to combat the effects of his Diabetes. That same year, the rapper explained what led to him wanting to have a healthier life.
"I wanted to live," Biz said in an interview with ABC News. "Since I have to be a diabetic, If I didn’t make the changes, it was going to make the diabetes worse. I’m trying to get off [the Diabetes meds]. The way you gotta do it is lose the weight. I’m off half my meds, I just got to get off the rest. They said I could lose my feet. They said I could lose body parts. A lot of things could happen."
