Watch Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper And Others Discuss Blue Note Records' Everlasting Impact

A documentary on famed jazz record label Blue Note will be making its world premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Titled Blue Note Records: Beyond the Notes, the documentary will feature appearances from label alums as well as fans. And in a trailer for the forthcoming film, Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin and others talk about Blue Note's impact on jazz music.

Hancock, whose first seven albums were released on Blue Note, talks about the artistic and creative freedom label founders Alfred Lion and Max Margulis gave him.

"I never got the sense of pressure from them to create any particular way other than what might come out of me," Hancock says.

From there, Martin talks about discovering jazz through hip-hop and the artists who sampled the genre.

"I fell in love with jazz through hip-hop," Martin says. "...Blue Note is the past, present, and the future."

"I think there's a movement going on now, a great movement" Glasper adds in another scene. "You have these other bands coming up that come from a jazz background."

Directed by Sophie Huber, the film will also feature appearances from Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Wayne Shorter, Rudy Van Gelder, Norah Jones, and others.

"This is a story about people who followed their passion and — against all odds — built a lasting platform for a music they loved, a music that was cathartic for them, that represented freedom...," Huber says on the film's website. "My goal was to extend this quest onto the screen and let the film be a platform for this incredibly powerful music and these much needed voices that promote unity and humanity and inspire hope."
