Bon Iver's Justin Vernon Tried to Kill His Eminem Collaboration on 'Kamikaze'
"This is not the time to criticize Youth, it’s the time to listen. To act. It is certainly not the time for slurs."
At midnight on Thursday evening, Eminem released the surprise album, Kamikaze, as his tenth studio album. Almost immediately, the rapper came under fire for attacking Tyler, The Creator with a homophobic slur in the song "Fall," which features an appearance from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon on the hook.
In the day since the album's release, Vernon has taken Twitter to not only distance himself from the collaboration (claiming that he "was not in the studio for the Eminem track",) but that he'd also made a deliberate attempt to amend the line in question from the song, and that they (Eminem, Mike Will, and BJ Burton,) "wouldn't do it."
Throughout the album, Em takes aim at myriad dissenters, including his own manager. Many have speculated that the rapper's decision to target Tyler specifically stems from the Odd Future co-founder's critique of the Beyonce collaboration, "Walk On Water."
An hour after his initial response, in which he professed that "Eminem is one of the best rappers of all time, there is no doubt," Vernon tweeted: "I was wrong and we are going to kill this track."
Eminem has yet to respond. Read Justin Vernon's full response via Twitter below.
