Pass The Popcorn: Rubble Kings [Exclusive Preview]
Last year a select few NY heads got the chance to see a rough cut of Rubble Kings--Shan Nicholson's documentary on the Bronx gang truce which paved the way for an explosion of culture which ultimately became known as hip-hop. Capturing a moment that's been immortalized in both urban legends and fiction films like The Warriors,RK is now nearing completion and to help raise the finishing funds necessary to tell this story properly, Nicholson has set up a kickstarter page to raise awareness about the project. Which is where we come in. To do our part, Pass The Popcorn will be screening a series of exclusive preview clips from the film to give Okayplayers a first look at this secret history of the South Bronx--and the ghetto renaissance of street style, dance and music that flowered within it. Appropriately, our first preview clip lays out the cultural landscape (battlefield might be a better description) of late 60s/early 70s BX, with its proliferation of gangs from the Seven Immortals (see above) to the infamous Black Spades. Watch below then scroll down for the kickstarter trailer, including info on the status of the film. Hit the link to support and get more info on the goodies your pledge qualifies you for from jackets to poster art (see at bottom). The fundraising campaign runs through March 21st so stay tuned for more clips soon and pass the popcorn.
