"They Played With Her Life": Police Storm Freshman's Dorm After Roommates Make False Report
"This could have been a Breonna Taylor circumstance," the attorney for the student, whose name is Christin Evans, said.
Police stormed Christin Evans dorm room at Stephen F. Austin State University after her roommates falsely claimed that she threatened them.
The incident occurred on September 14, when Evans, a Black student, was awakened by a group of campus police officers who had their weapons drawn on her. According to The Washington Post, the police had been called by a resident adviser after a group of students, who included Evans' three white roommates, said that the 17-year-old had threatened to stab then with a pair of scissors. Following the incident, police reviewed security footage that showed Evans was innocent.
Evans' family and her lawyer, Randall Kallinen, have referred to the incident as an act of "swatting." Swatting is a dangerous prank that is meant to cause such alarm that police respond aggressively or even with a SWAT team. The teen's family has called on the school to reprimand the students who made the false claim.
"Yes, we're upset and we want something to be done about it," Chris Evans, her father, said at a news conference according to ABC 13. "When I sent my daughter off to school, my worse-case scenario was that she should call needing money or an issue with her grades."
"This could have been a Breonna Taylor circumstance," Kallinen added about the incident.
The school has been conducting an investigation on the incident for the past two weeks.
"Each perpetrator will be dealt with appropriately," SFA President Scott Gordon said in a statement to The Post. "My heart goes out to the young lady who was an innocent victim in this matter. We will do all we can to support her and her family through this heinous ordeal."
