Chuck D Talks Hot 97, Hip-Hop Culture + More On The Combat Jack Show
Public Enemy's Chuck D and Keith Shocklee talk hip-hop culture and more with Reggie Ossé and Premium Pete on the latest episode of The Combat Jack Show. Chuck voices his frustrations with Hot 97 following the social media dust-up with a few of the station's personalities during Summer Jam 2014. Chuck accuses the station of being disrespectful to black people and hip-hop culture. Not one to make a statement he cannot defend, Chuck D breaks down the science behind his feelings about what ails hip-hop and talks about the dumbing down of the culture, which he says is aided by urban radio's misappropriation of black music and standard lack of responsibility. Combat Jack drops the latest interview with a note on the importance of the discussion:
Internets, this is such an honor. It's been few years of me trying to get the legendary Chuck D on The Combat Jack Show. It took current events, plus the Freddie Foxxx episode to make this happen (thank you Bumpy!). How do I even describe this 3 hour long discussion with Chuck D and Keith Shocklee? Def Jam, Hot 97, Dr. Dre, N.W.A., Ice Cube, Tupac Shakur, Marley Marl, Flavor Flav, Eric B and Rakim, COINTELPRO, Run-DMC, the Bomb Squad, the dearth of diversity on rap radio... so much knowledge.
What I'm walking away with is how we have the power to control how we're perceived in this culture. And how we have to stop making excuses. Now. Ladies and gents, we present to you, the Episode Without A Pause.
