Congress Sends Trump Joint Resolution Condemning White Supremacy, KKK, Neo-Nazis
Congress has passed a resolution condemning white supremacists but it is unknown if Donald Trump will sign it.
In a report from Politico, the joint resolution was introduced last week by Charlottesville Representative Tom Garret (R-VA) and calls for Trump to "speak out against hate groups that espouse racism, extremism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, and White supremacy; and use all resources available to the President and the President's Cabinet to address the growing prevalence of those hate groups in the United States." It also calls for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to work with the Secretary of Homeland Security to "investigate thoroughly all acts of violence, intimidation, and domestic terrorism by White supremacists, White nationalists, neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and associated groups."
Although the joint resolution was unanimously passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, it does not seem to be a priority for the White House, with a spokesperson telling reporters "No announcements at this time" in response to questions about Trump signing the resolution.
READ: Trump Returns To Blaming 'Both Sides' For Deadly Violence In Charlottesville
In light of the events that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, Trump has received backlash for not explicitly calling out white supremacists. He had initially blamed "both sides" for the violence that occurred during the "Unite The Rally" in Charlottesville but had briefly condemned white supremacists, the KKK, and neo-Nazis in an address from the White House. Ultimately, Trump returned to blaming both sides, saying:
I think there is blame on both sides. What about the 'alt-left' that came charging at, as you say, the 'alt-right,' do they have any semblance of guilt? What about the fact they came charging with clubs in hands, swinging clubs, do they have any problem? I think they do.You had a group on one side that was bad and you had a group on the other side that was also very violent. Nobody wants to say it, but I will say it right now.
