Dallas Residents Want To Rename Robert E. Lee Park After Erykah Badu

Let's help make this happen.

Recently, the city of Dallas, Texas, removed a Robert E. Lee statue after city council voted 13-1 in favor of removing the statue from a park also bearing the Confederate general's name. With the statue gone the city is now working on renaming the park, having temporarily changed its name to Oak Lawn Park until an official name is approved.

Well, some of the residents of Dallas have suggested that the park be named after the one and only Erykah Badu. A petition has been made on change.org by Dallas-based website Central Track in hopes of making this a reality, with the petition's creators simply addressing the following to Dallas City Council: "Change Robert E. Lee Park (Dallas) To Erykah Badu Park."

Pete Freedman, the co-founder of Central Track, also took to the website to state why renaming the park after Badu is a no-brainer.

"Lord knows the renowned R&B singer deserves that distinction. Hell, they already named a whole day after her down in Houston, recognizing her many accomplishments and all that she's done to inspire young artists around the state, and somehow beating Dallas to that punch," Freedman writes. "Naming a local park after her would go a long way toward making up for that misstep, for sure."

So far, the letter has received 1,393 supporters and needs 107 more. You can sign the petition here.
