D'Angelo Confirmed To Perform At 'Get On Up: A James Brown Celebration'
Great googa mooga. D'Angelo has officially signed on to what is already a star-studded cast set to pay tribute to The Godfather this coming August at the Hollywood Bowl. Get On Up: A James Brown Celebration will host the James Brown Alumni Band--featuring Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and the OG funky drummer Clyde Stubblefield-- multi-platform diva Angélique Kidjo, soul-smashing vocalist Bettye LaVette, and Aloe Blacc. The event will be musically directed by longtime Roots crony and former bassist Christian McBride, who will get the opportunity to conduct a roster of funk's high priests.
The tribute will take place at LA's Hollywood Bowl on August 13th, perfectly complimenting the release of the Get On Up biopic on August 1st, which will attempt to accurately portray the legacies of several of the luminaries taking to the stage. D'Angelo's performance will follow-up his RBMA appearance A Conversation With D'Angelo on May 21st and the revamped reissue of his early live cut Live At The Jazz Cafe, London, keeping us all on our heels as rumors continue to swirl over the near complete status of the R&B savior's follow up to the game-changing Voodoo LP. Tickets for Get On Up: A James Brown Celebration go on sale May 4th.
