D'Angelo Is Bringing The Vanguard To Minneapolis's Legendary First Avenue
The stars have finally aligned: D'Angelo has confirmed a new live date at Minneapolis's legendary Prince-christened palace of funk, First Avenue. The living R&B legend will march out onto the stage made famous by Purple Rain on Sunday, September 6th.
The show will be D'Angelo's first Minneapolis gig since 2013--he and Questlove made a very special stop at First Avenue for one of their limited run "Brothers In Arms" duo shows two years ago last week. The upcoming show, however, will see D backed by his full Vanguard troupe and in the full command of his vocal powers, as we observed last month during his searing West Coast shows. Packed into the tight, gritty confines of one of America's most important music venues, it's a sure bet that things will get funky, romantic and downright damn explosive. And not to get carried away, but Prince does have a penchant for dropping by at certain local shows. Might attendees get the chance to take it all in with the Purple One in attendance? Or are there perhaps even funkier plans afoot? It's only a 30 minute drive from downtown Minneapolis to Paisley Park...
Tickets for D'Angelo's First Avenue show go on sale at noon on July 10th and can be purchased via the venue's website. Relive a bit of his last appearance in Minnesota below.
