Did Dapper Dan's Gap Hoodie Immediately Sell Out?
We were online for the collaborative drop last week, and the experience of attempting to purchase the $99 hoodie wasn't great.
When Gap announced Dapper Dan would be releasing his own collaboration with the brand, the internet rejoiced. The beloved designer is known for being one of the most regarded names in fashion due to his handcrafted contributions in the ‘80s and ‘90s.
Were Dapper Dan’s fans prepared for the “DAP” hoodies to immediately sell out? No.
The intentions behind the collaborative hoodie were to pay homage to those who have shaped culture, hence the name of the campaign it was a part of was: “American Dream.” The Spring 2022 campaign included a diverse selection of individuals including graffiti artist Chito.
To put it plainly, here’s how Dapper Dan expressed the collab alongside Gap via an interview with Complex:
“Gap is like pizza, everybody eats pizza. And everybody at some point or another is going to bring a pie home. That’s what Gap represents. It represents that part of food that we all relate to. Gap speaks to all of us, but it’s a part of who I am and who we all are. So I love that.”
The coral hoodies ($99) which were an acknowledgment of the cultural figure were released last Thursday, March 10 at 4 p.m. EST. When fans including myself aimed to secure a hoodie, it was basically impossible. Not only was it difficult to find on the site, but within five minutes, it was sold out despite being a pre-order item. For anyone who was able to secure a piece, it will ship out in June.
Unfortunately, despite the drop being presented as accessible, it wasn’t. Many fans took to Twitter to share their disappointment with the experience of aiming to cop the special hoodie. Some fans think that bots took over the entire drop. On the day of the release, one Twitter user expressed they secured a hoodie through a bot.
We’re unsure what happened, but we’re hoping there’s a restock.
