Dave Chappelle's 'Saturday Night Live' Debut Earned Him His First Emmy Ever
Firsts on firsts on firsts
Not even a week after the most morbid presidential election in our nation's history, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock were helping us find something to smile about on Saturday Night Live.
In his debut appearance as host of the late-night program, Chappelle disavowed his Chappelle's Show characters and opened the evening by directly addressing the Pulse nightclub shooting, police brutality and the inevitability of a Trump presidency. This past weekend, during the Creative Arts Emmy's (a pre-ceremony push that also saw Common take home hist first award for contributing to Ava DuVernay's 13th) Chappelle snagged his very first Emmy after being nominated three times in 2004 for Chappelle's Show. Melissa McCarthy and her infamous Sean Spicer impression took home another of Saturday Night Live's 22 nominations, tying 30 Rocks' record for nominations in a single year.
The Emmy arrives on the heels of the comedian's historic 16-night run at NYC's Radio City Music Hall, where he was joined by Erykah Badu, The Roots, Chance The Rapper, Childish Gambino, Yasiin Bey and more. He moves onto a one-off at The Peppermint Club tomorrow night in Los Angeles before the commencement of another residency at The Warner Theater in his hometown of Washington, DC next week.
