DC's 'Black Lightning' TV Series Lands On Fox

DC Comics is adding yet another superhero series into their television universe: Black Lightning.

According to a report from Entertainment Weekly Fox will be hosting the Black Lightning series, with the television network making a pilot production commitment for the drama.

The show will be centered around Black Lightning, one of the first black superheroes in comic book history. Created in 1977 the superhero (who's actually named Jefferson Pierce) at first was described as having no innate powers, relying on a belt that allowed him to project electrical bolts. Since then however his origin story has changed, with current Black Lightning comic book series explaining that he was born with the ability to harness and use electrical energy.

Husband and wife team Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil will write the series, that sees Pierce coming out of retirement thanks to a "daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang," in order to rejoin the fight as the legendary Black Lightning. Sarah Schechter will also act as executive producer for the show.

As for the super producer leading the charge (no pun intended), it's none other than Greg Berlanti, who has in hands in most of the DC superhero TV series: Arrow, The Flash, DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl (all of which are at The CW). It'll be interesting to see the route that Black Lightning takes since it'll be on Fox, which is home to fellow DC Comics-related show Gotham.

Where The CW superhero shows fully embrace the comic book history and mythology of the characters within each series, Gotham is very much its own thing. Maybe Black Lightning will be a mix of both but we'll just have to wait and see. A premiere date has yet to be announced, but we'll be sure to update you as more information becomes available.
