Straight from the '70s, Hear Death's New Psychedelic-Punk Single "Look At Your Life"
Death is inescapable, ceaseless and comes for everyone. If your idea of early Detroit punk is limited to MC5, then get your head on straight and listen to the black sonic riot that is Death, motor city's meanest rock trio. After being profiled at length in the 2013 film A Band Called Death, the group has been in long-overdue resurgence mode and are set to drop their first record in nearly four decades, entitled simply N.E.W., on April 21st.
To both whet our appetites and shock our skulls, Death has just dropped "Look At Your Life," a punishing dose of punk rock that gets plenty psychedelic in its chromatic pre-verse build-ups. Originally formed by three brothers, Bobby, Dannis, and David Hackney, Death was in every way a young gritty band with big dreams, recording their first demos in their parents garage during the early 1970s. After calling it quits in 1977, the brothers moved to Vermont and formed the reggae act Lambsbread. Sadly, David Hackney passed away in 2000, but with new guitarist Bobbie Duncan, Death have finally returned unto us.
Much of the material on Death's new album was first conceived in the 70s, and the juicy overdriven guitars and punch basslines of "Look At Your Life" definitely sound plucked from that era, back when punk rock was just forming, the nation's post-Vietnam confidence was wavering, and cities like Detroit reeled with limitless youthful frustration. It's aggressive and remorseless, with bits of thrash at its edges and an overall sense of rebellion at every turn.
