Deontay Wilder Threatens To Kill Dominic Breazeale in Boxing Match: "If It Comes It Comes"
"This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It's legal. So why not use my right to do so?"
Ahead of his boxing match with Dominic Breazeale on Saturday, Deontay Wilder has made certain remarks regarding the fight that have led to backlash.
"Dominic Breazeale asked for this. I didn't go seek him. He [sought] me. So if it comes it comes. This is a brutal sport. This is not a gentleman sport," Wilder said while speaking to media Tuesday. "We don't ask to hit each other in the face but we do anyway. And you can ask any doctor around the world, he will tell you, your head is not meant to be hit."
"On this particular time we have bad blood against each other," he continued. "This is the only sport where you can kill a man and get paid for it at the same time. It's legal. So why not use my right to do so?"
Wilder also made a recent appearance on ESPN's First Take, where he made similar comments.
"On Saturday night it's gonna be a massacre," the boxer said. "I've always talked about wanting something on my record, wanting a body on my record, and boxing you get the opportunity to do what you gotta do and get paid for it."
These are the latest comments Wilder has made in alluding to want to kill Breazeale. Wilder had previously told Breazeale to "make some funeral arrangements" according to the Independent. However, he's made these remarks to other fighters too, like Bermane Stiverne in 2017.
As the Independent noted, promoters and fighters alike have criticized Wilder for his comments. Eddie Hearn, a promoter who has held long negotiations with Wilder and his team over a future fight with Anthony Joshua, said that Wilder's comments are "bad for the sport." Last year, former cruiserweight world champion Tony Bellew said that Wilder is "a disgrace and senseless idiot."
The WBC heavyweight champion will fight against Breazeale on Saturday.
