Disney Orders 'Sister Act' Reboot from 'Insecure' Writer and 'Star' Showrunner
The Mouse just keeps getting bigger
As Disney readies itself to take on Netflix and Hulu in the battle for your smallest screens, its arsenal of programming appears to be broadening by the day.
According to Variety, The Mouse has tapped Insecure writer and co-executive-producer, Regina Hicks, and Star showrunner, Karen Gist, to pen the third installment in the beloved Sister Act franchise. Plot details remain skim, but there's no mention of Whoopi Goldberg's involvement in the reboot just yet.
The Sister Act sequel is just the latest addition to a colossal incoming contender in the streaming age. Eyeing a late-2019 launch, the proprietary streaming service's arrival will coincide with the dissolving of content sharing agreements with Netflix that will effectively transfer all Marvel and Star Wars properties to the newly established Disney service.
Disney has already announced a new Star Wars trilogy from director Jon Favreau, as well as limited run series for Marvel's Loki, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, and Winter Soldier. A hard date for the launch of "Disney+" has yet to be announced, but that can't be too far down the line. Stay tuned for updates in the weeks and months ahead.
