Doechii Shares The Lauryn Hill Song She Gravitates Toward "All The Time"
Doechii also revealed how Doug E. Fresh inspired something she does in her song, “Denial is a River.”
In a recent interview, Doechii extended praise toward the legendary Lauryn Hill.
Speaking to 032c, a publication based out of Berlin, Doechii was asked, “Is there a record that blew your mind as a teenager that you keep returning to?”“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” she replied. “There’s also a song of hers that I gravitate towards all the time that a lot of people don’t know. It’s called ‘Peace of Mind,’ from her last on-camera live performance.”
Doechii is likely referring to “I Gotta Find Peace of Mind,” which was released on her MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 album. The album is a recording of her 2001 MTV Unplugged performance.
Elsewhere in the interview, the TDE rapper revealed how Doug E. Fresh inspired something she does in her song, “Denial is a River.”
After being asked if the breaths she takes at the end of the track are a “reference to healing breathwork,” she clarified that it was a nod to the incredible “Human Beat Box.”
“But actually that ‘uh, uh, uhhh’ sound is inspired by Doug E. Fresh’s beatboxing style,” Doechii said. “But I love that it sounds like that to you — I think that’s beautiful.”
Last week, it was revealed that Doechii had received four Grammy nominations for next year’s award ceremony, two of which were for her latest mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal: Best Rap Album and Best New Artist. The other nominations are for Best Rap Performance and Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, courtesy of Kaytranada’s remix of her song, “Alter Ego,” which also features JT.
She is the first female rapper to receive the Best Rap Album nomination in the 2020s.
Doechii spoke about the nominations with Baller Alert, saying, “I am excited. I felt it in my spirit that I was gonna get this, and I got it and I feel incredible.”
