Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge Set to Star in 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' Series
The show is slated to premiere on Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be offering a new take on the 2005 film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
According to Variety, Glover and Waller-Bridge will both star as the titular characters and serve as executive producers on a series adaptation of the film for Amazon Prime Video. "Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team," says Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios who announced the project was green-lit on Instagram last night (see below.)
The original film was a box-office smash starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, centering on a married couple working for rival assassin agencies. Another film with the same title was directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1941. The Mr. and Mrs. Smith adaptation escalates the actors' relationship with Amazon, following Glover's film, Guava Island, and Waller-Bridge's hit series, Fleabag, which won six Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be Glover and Waller-Bridge's second time linking on the screen. Both actors previously starred in the 2018 film, Solo: A Star Wars Story, as Lando Calrissian and L3-37, respectively. Glover paid tribute to his co-star at the BAFTA Britannia Awards the following year before presenting Waller-Bridge with the award for British Artist of The Year. The series will add yet another project to each actor's docket. Glover is currently working on seasons three and four of Atlanta, while Waller-Bridge contributed to the screenplay for the upcoming James Bond film, No Time To Die, which is due later this year.
