Donald Trump Has Officially Been Impeached by the House
Donald Trump is the third sitting president to be impeached.
Donald Trump has been impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
This is the third time a sitting president has been met with this sanction, he follows Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson. His abuse of power points out his involvement in pressuring Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. Additionally, he obstructed Congress’ efforts to investigate his “international shakedown,” reports the Rolling Stone.
Earlier this evening, the House voted 230 to 197 to impeach Trump for abuse of power. Two Democrats voted against the impeachment. Every Republican voted no, with two who abstained. This vote lasted 15 minutes.
The vote on the second article lasted five minutes and was also largely along party lines, the vote was 229-198. Following this, the Republican-led Senate must hold a trial which is slated to begin in early January. This will determine whether or not Trump will be removed from office.
Last Friday, the House voted to open debate on articles of impeachment against Trump, according to Essence. This step would prove to be a step in the right direction to move Democrats closer to final votes to “charge the president with committing high crimes and misdemeanors.” Today, Democrats and Republicans in the House reportedly debated for six hours on the article of impeachment.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened the debate by stating: "Our founders’ vision of a republic is under threat from actions from the White House. If we do not act now, we would be derelict in our duty. It’s tragic the president’s reckless actions make impeachment necessary. He gave us no choice."
Throughout the day, Trump has taken to Twitter to address his thoughts on his impending impeachment, one tweet read:
"SUCH ATROCIOUS LIES BY THE RADICAL LEFT, DO NOTHING DEMOCRATS. THIS IS AN ASSAULT ON AMERICA, AND AN ASSAULT ON THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!!!!"
