Fans React to the Release of Drake's Surprise New Mixtape 'Dark Lane Demo Tapes'
Out of nowhere, Drake dropped a new mixtape called Dark Lane Demo Tapes. Find out what fans had to say and why they are upset with Playboi Carti.
The unfortunate developments of 2020 aren't stopping Drake.
On Thursday, Drake announced on Instagram that he was dropping his sixth studio album this summer. With that announcement came another surprise: he was releasing a surprise new mixtape called Dark Lane Demo Tapes on Friday, May 1st. What's the difference between a Drake mixtape and album in 2020? Well, Drake described Dark Lane Demo Tapes as "some leaks and some joints from SoundCloud and some new vibes."
Dark Lane Demo Tape features a number of tracks you might have heard already. This includes the Michael Jackson-inspired "Toosie Slide;" “When to Say When” and “Chicago Freestyle,” which features an appearance from Giveon; the UK-inspired "War;" "Desires," which features Future; and "Demons," a Brooklyn drill song with Fivio Foreign and Sosa Geek that has been floating around the Internet for months.
Other features on the album include Chris Brown, Young Thug, and Playboi Carti. On the production side, Drake gets beats from 40, Plain Pat, Southside, Pi'erre Bourne, Axl Beats, JB Made It, and more.
Once the new Drake hit at midnight, that's all fans could talk about on the Internet. This is unfortunate for rappers like Mozzy who also had music release today.
Most fans were feeling the new music, and just excited to have another pop culture event to hold them down while under quarantine.
However, there were some complaints. The most highly anticipated song on the album was "Pain 1993," which features an appearance from Playboi Carti, the most popular rapper on the Internet. People were not happy with Playboi's verse, which features baby voiced Carti:
Fans also weren't happy with "Not You Too," which features an appearance from Chris Brown. Well sort of. Fans realized soon that Brown was taking a more background role on the song.
The emotional centerpiece of the album is "FromFlorida, with Love." On the track, Drake raps openly about his 2009 robbery where goons took his chain. On the song Drake raps:
Niggas had they pistols loaded pointed at my truckAnd you know that lesson stuck
From that day I never touched the road without a (Plug)
From that day I never saw the point in talkin' tough
Hasn't happened since, I guess you niggas know what's up
The reaction to "FromFlorida, with Love" has been overwhelmingly positive.
