Elizabeth Warren's Surprise 'SNL' Appearance is Dividing Progressives on Twitter
With her endorsement still in the air, responses to the Massachusetts Senator's cameo ranged from harsh critique to praise and general indifference.
Last night, Elizabeth Warren made a surprise appearance in Saturday Night Live's cold open.
The Massachusetts Senator, who dropped out of the campaign earlier this week after a disappointing Super Tuesday performance, popped up at the tail-end of a Fox News sketch led by Kate McKinnon's Laura Ingraham. Introduced as "the woman who savagely murdered Michael Bloomberg on live television," Warren took a moment to jab at herself, the folding of her campaign, and the absence of her endorsement.

"It’s tough. Maybe I’ll just pull a New York Times and endorse them both," Warren joked when asked who she'd back in the election now that she's out of the running. She added, "I am so proud of my campaign. We built a wide coalition of teachers, preschool teachers, middle school teachers, and teachers’ pets. And not only did I not accept money from billionaires, I got to give one a swirly on live TV." McKinnon rushed in dressed in a matching pantsuit for the "Live in New York" commencement and at some point before or after recorded a "Flip The Switch" challenge submission with the Senator that has since gone viral.

All of which seemed fairly benign,v but it's currently widening the rift between progressives on Twitter. Responses have ranged from praise for the Senator's humility to general indifference to stark critique of time spent on prepping for a skit instead of canvassing alongside Bernie Sanders in Michigan, a crucial state voting in Tuesday's primaries. The conversation keeps splintering from there, as Warren supporters charge "Bernie Bros" with unreasonable expectations and not letting the Senator enjoy a moment after a hard fought campaight, while the Sanders corner insists on the urgency of securing her support to focus and unite the progressive arm of the party as Sanders squares up with Biden for the nomination. And somehow, even AOC got caught in the crossfire for liking a tweet.
