As the host of the show Badu started off by saying "I know I usually do a big elaborate musical number, but right here I feel I need to this," before kneeling on the stage. "This is for Kap. Kap we appreciate you, for giving up your life, your dream, for your belief in us."
Kaepernick showed his thanks for Badu's gesture with the following tweet.
Recently, Kaepernick made a surprise appearance at the Indigenous People's Sunrise Gathering at Alcatraz Island. The event was held to honor the "Indians of All Tribes" who took part in the Occupation of Alcatraz back in 1969-71.
"If there is one thing that I take away from today and seeing the beauty of everybody out here, it is that we're only getting stronger every day, we're only getting larger and larger every day," Colin said during a speech he gave at the event. "I see the strength in everybody...The dancing, the rituals — that is our resistance. We continue to fight. We continue to fight for justice. We fight for our freedom, and we continue on that path."
Kaepernick also recently graced the cover of GQ Magazine as its "Citizen of the Year." The story featured the likes of J. Cole, Harry Belafonte, and others speaking on Kaepernick's impact.
