'It's An Anthem': Watch Erykah Badu Discuss The Creation Of "Tyrone"

Erykah Badu recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of her Live album which happens to include the standout song "Tyrone."

The leading single for the album "Tyrone" became a hit, being played on radio, earning a nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards, and resulting in Live going double platinum.

In a recent interview with ET, Badu talked about the song's creation and its impact 20 years later.

"It just came together on stage actually. You know, the tradition of hip-hop, we just freestyle on stage a lot. And that song was actually freestyled," Badu said during a Facebook Live with ET's Denny Directo. "We used to play around on the rose in rehearsal...it was a real soulful kind of thing. I got on stage one night and gave [Norman "Keys" Hurt] the cue to play that, and the background singers would just look or nod, they understood, 'This is what we're going to do. Are you sure you want to do this?' And I'm like, 'OK.'"

"I just started and it just turned into 'Tyrone,'" she added. "It was on the radio the next day in its live version."

Although Badu now considers the song to be somewhat of "an ex-boyfriend," she is happy to see that fans continue to resonate with the song today.

"It's like an ex-boyfriend who won't stop following me," she said. "And it's a blessing at the same time because it's an anthem."

Badu also speaks on the possibility of creating new music, stating that she's waiting to be inspired again.

"I think I'm uploading right now, so once I get some information, I'll download it and write it and sing it," she said. "It always comes from a very honest place. It's autobiographical."

Badu recently made an appearance on Desus and Mero where she talked about being a doula, ahead of her hosting the upcoming Soul Train Awards on Sunday, November 26, on BET.
