Freddie Joachim Shares New 'Charcoal' EP Compilation

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Always funky and intelligent, the music of California-based Freddie Joachim embodies so much of what we love at Okayplayer, and on his just-released EP Charcoal, the producer sounds as good as he ever has. Comprised of six tracks, the set is a collection of unreleased cuts from Joachim, along with singles previously released piecemeal via SoundCloud. That includes "May," the juicy hip-hop number that floats just a few inches off the floor as it gently tosses and turns, and leadoff track "No Matter What," which blends electro beeps with what almost digs into drum-n-bass territory. It's like an ingenious sampler platter of modern beats, and every taste is divine. Dilla heads, we recommend you put on "Childhood Memories" asap. You'll be thanking us (and Mr. Joachim).

Charcoal is a kind of summing-up for Freddie, a compendium of his recent and rare grooves. Joachim is reportedly now working on a number of yet-untitled projects and collaborations with other artists within the orbit of his Mellow Orange label, and we've been told that the ideal plan is to release a full-length of his own compositions in 2016. For now, purchase the record via Joachim's bandcamp page, and listen to Charcoal below and start off your day (or end your night) with some brilliant beats.
