A few weeks back, he received an inevitable co-sign from Drake who always has his ear to the ground when it comes to emerging talent. The feature on “Chicago Freestyle” catapulted Giveon directly into the spotlight.
Our favorite tracks on the album start with “The Beach,” a song about his roots in Los Angeles. It serves as an ideal intro to a project as expansive as Take Time, it’s also equipped with the sound of lush guitars. He alludes to gunshots that could be fireworks and manages to fuse his thoughts on yearning for a lover throughout the cut.
“World We Created,” “Favorite Mistake” and “This Ain’t Love” are the additional standouts we’ve kept coming back to since receiving the project early. “World We Created” is beautifully written and it touches on the fulfilling feeling of being in love. The relationship he’s singing about also is marked by trust issues, overthinking and second-guessing.
Over on “Favorite Mistake” he reflects on a secret situation with someone he feels connected to. This song is extremely relatable and digs into what it’s like growing sensual feelings for a special person over time. “This Ain’t Love” expertly displays the lengths of Giveon’s range. It also pushes listeners to reminisce about being in an unhealthy partnership that feels good in the moment or as the years go on. Honorable mentions: “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “Vanish.”
In total, Take Time is one hell of a debut. It stands out amongst the auto-tuned, generic R&B music that many artists have become comfortable shelling out. Giveon is here to stay for the meanwhile and millennials might have just found a new voice to follow.
