Not One Black Person Won a Golden Globe Last Night
A lot happened at the 2020 Golden Globes. Here is a quick recap, with a list of all the winners.
Even though we are on the brink of war, and the world is literally burning, Hollywood's elite gathered on Sunday, January 5th, for the 77th Golden Globe awards. To be fair, the state of affairs was on everyone's mind, messages about the fires in Australia, the United States' upcoming war with Iran, and the importance of voting were sprinkled throughout. And the guests were treated to fancy-looking, environment-friendly plant-based food. (Thanks, apparently, to Jokerstar Joaquin Phoenix.)
Host Rickey Gerviasu had a completely nihilistic view of the show. "Remember they're just jokes. We're all gonna die soon and there's no sequel," he said during his opening monologue. The most scathing moment came when Gerviasu ripped the companies that are funding Hollywood — and the dubious ways those companies make its profits.
"Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show, a superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China," Gerviasu said while Apple CEO Tim Cook was sitting in attendance. "Well, you say you're woke but the companies you work for in China...If ISIS started a streaming service you'd call your agent, wouldn't you?"
When it came to the awards, the big winners were 1917, which won three awards including best motion picture drama and best director, and Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood, which also won three awards, include best motion picture comedy or musical, best screenplay, and best supporting actor.
The most disappointing — but not surprising — outcome was the lack of diversity with the winners. Not one black person won a Golden Globe last night. This meant stars like Eddie Murphey and Beyoncé had to sit as other stars won awards. (Taron Egerton beat Eddie Murphey for best actor in comedy or musical, while Elton John beat Beyoncé for best original song.)
The real problem might have been there were many notable people, movies, and TV shows that weren't even nominated: like Lupita Nyong'o for Us; Zendaya for Euphoria; Sterling K. Brown for Waves; and Jamie Foxx for Just Mercy.
A little bit of history was made, however, when rapper Awkwafina became the first Asian-American woman to win a Golden Globe Award for best actress. (She won for her role in The Farewell.)
Joaquin Phoenix took home the award for best actor in a drama for Joker. Everyone seemed to be happy for him, with one exception:
Phoenix gave a meandering speech where he cursed and he talked about how none of this matters. And you know what, he's fucking right.
Here is a list of the rest of the winners.
