The 2022 Grammys Have A New Date (And Host City)
The 64th annual Grammy Awards will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3.
For the first time since the '70s, the Grammys won't be taking place in LA or New York. On Tuesday, January 18th, the Recording Academy announced that the 64th annual Grammy Awards will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 3.
This comes two weeks after the Recording Academy announced that they were postponing the 2022 Grammys, which were scheduled to happen on January 31. The show was scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Trevor Noah, the host of The Daily Show, will be the host.
In a statement from Recording Academy and CBS, the Recording Academy said they were delaying the ceremony due to concerns around the rise of Omicron-related Covid-19 cases.
“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual GRAMMY Awards Show... The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31st simply contains too many risks."
This isn't the first time Grammy postponed its show. Last year they moved the show back to March with a smaller crowd than originally planned. According to Billboard, this will be the latest that the Grammys have been held since 1965. (That show was held on April 13, 1965.)
The 2022 Grammys were announced in November. Musician Jon Batiste is the 2022 Grammy leader, garnering 11 nominations, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year. For Album of the Year, Batiste will be battling it out with Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, and Billie Eilish.
