Harriet Tubman Fights Demons, Vampires & White Supremacy In New Comic Book Series
Comixology describes the comic book series as "Django Unchained + Buffy The Vampire Slayer + Mad Max: Fury Road."
Created by David Crownson and drawn by Courtland Ellis, Joey Vazquez, and N. Steven Harris, Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer finds the iconic abolitionist and activist fighting not only slave owners but various monsters in hopes of freeing a family of slaves. A synopsis of the series is as follows:
When slave owners can't stop the formidable ninja warrior Harriet Tubman, they call on the help of Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, & Demons to stop her. Harriet Tubman must lead a family of slaves to freedom while battling an army of darkness.
Crownson initially started a Kickstarter for the comic book series back in November 2016 and raised over $20,000 (the original pledge amount was $15,000).
"It started as my own thing my own selfish reasons...and then I shared it on Facebook and it got a whole bunch of likes," Crownson explains in a video on the Kickstarter page. "And then I realized that it's not just about me anymore, it's about a whole community of people that are excited about this idea."
Both the first and second issues of Demon Slayer are available online.
In recent years we've seen pop culture celebrate and honor Tubman as the bold and courageous abolitionist she was. In the TV series Underground we saw Aisha Hinds play Tubman as an axe and rifle-wielding fighter who rescued the show's protagonist, Rosalee.
