Is Blue Ivy Wearing The Notorious B.I.G.'s Iconic $600,000 Crown?
A picture of Blue Ivy in Beyonce's latest Instagram post has social media buzzing.
At Sunday's Grammy Awards, Beyonce made history as the most-nominated woman and the second-most awarded person in Grammy history. This time around, her daughter Blue Ivy Carter got in on the fun, getting her first golden gramophone for her contributions to "Brown Skin Girls." As the Carters celebrated their victories with a highlight reel Instagram post, the internet focused on another golden object in one of the shots.
Eagle-eyed commenters on Instagram claim that the crown Blue Ivy is wearing in one of the pictures is the very same one that the Notorious B.I.G. wore in his iconic "King of New York" photoshoot with Barron Claiborne.
The crown, autographed by Biggie and Claiborne, was sold for $594,750 at Sotheby's Auction House last September during its first hip-hop memorabilia auction. At the moment, the auction house hasn't responded to Okayplayer's request for confirmation.
“This crown is a novelty item; I bought it at a place on Broadway called Gordon’s,” Claiborne told the New York Post at the time of the sale. Claiborne owned the crown and used it in the stunning Rap Pages magazine cover-photo he took of Biggie in 1997. “Without Biggie, the crown would not be worth [six figures]. I only paid six bucks for it. Some people told me that it's too low. That shows you how strong the symbol really is. I always thought Biggie was a king."
Claiborne also revealed that he wasn't sure if he was even paid for the photo. Additionally, he says Diddy wasn't a fan of the crown at the time.
“He said it would make Biggie look like Burger King,” Claiborne said. “But Biggie didn’t listen. He wore it anyway. And nobody’s ever told me that they look at the photo and think the crown is plastic.”
